Methods for collecting data can be divided into 2 broad types: quantitative and qualitative. Many studies utilise both broad approaches, with one set of data and findings building on and complementing the other. Generally, if one wants to quantify data and findings, quantitative approaches are used; if one wants to understand the why and the how, qualitative approaches are used.
Given the nature and focus of this study, i.e. exploring understandings, perceptions and experiences of cash transfers, this study focused on qualitative methods. In addition, participatory and ethnographic approaches were also used. Find out more about each method by clicking on the relevant boxes below.
All of the methods discussed here were used by researchers in this project.
